About AFiG
AFiG goes to the cinema together.
A community first, then a film club: every kind of film, and everyone is welcome.
Since October 2024: 195 events at 26 cinemas and venues, rated 4.9 out of 5 by members on Meetup.
How an evening works
Pick an event in Events.
Buy your ticket from the cinema; a Cineville pass works at many of them. Where seats are assigned, the event says where the host sits, so you can book nearby.
Then RSVP on Meetup, so the host knows you are coming and the places go to people with a ticket.
Meet in the lobby at the meetup time. It is earlier than the film, and every event shows both times. We go in together shortly before the start, so try to be there on time.
meet first, film afterAfterwards, we talk about the film. Sometimes over a drink, and on some evenings over dinner too.
the best part
What we watch
All kinds: new releases and blockbusters, classics and cult films, restorations, documentaries, festival screenings, and one-off specials with a Q&A or live music. Sometimes in IMAX or 4DX, sometimes in a small neighbourhood cinema. All over Amsterdam: Eye, LAB111, Pathé, FilmHallen, Studio/K, De Uitkijk and more, and now and then a trip further away.
Many are in a language other than English, so every event says the film's language and subtitles: you know you'll follow it before you buy a ticket.
The name
Every fig hides a garden. Every cinema, a world.
AFiG is said "a fig", like the fruit.
A fig flowers on the inside, like a cinema: its flowers bloom hidden inside the fruit. Our logo is a fig cut in half, with its seeds set like the holes of a film reel.
Join us
The group lives on Meetup: every event is published there, and that is where you RSVP. Members also chat in a WhatsApp community; you'll find the link on our Meetup page, or ask at an event.
Want to suggest a film? Sign in and use Recommend. To host a screening yourself, message the organizers on Meetup.
This website
Made by the group's hosts, as volunteers. It has no ads and sells nothing.
- The events come from our Meetup page, where the hosts publish them; an organizer copies them over by hand every day.
- Film details come from TMDB.
- The Film finder reads the cinemas' own websites once a day, and shows a film's language and subtitles only as the cinema states them.
- Members who sign in can recommend films to the hosts, and rate the evenings they came to.
This website uses TMDB and the TMDB APIs but is not endorsed, certified, or otherwise approved by TMDB.
Privacy
Reading this site, the Film finder included, needs no account and sets no cookies. If you sign in to keep a watchlist, recommend films or rate an evening, we keep your email address (and your name, if you use Google), stored in the EU, only to know it's you. We never sell them.
What you recommend is kept with your name and email so the hosts can see who sent it and reply. Other members never see it. A line you write about an evening is public, with your first name.
