Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies is a searing, meticulously crafted exploration of family secrets and the legacies of war, tracing the journey of twins Jeanne and Simon as they uncover the hidden truths of their late mother’s life. Villeneuve navigates between past and present with a precision that heightens both tension and emotional resonance, capturing landscapes of memory and trauma with stark, haunting beauty. The performances are quietly devastating, embodying grief, resilience, and the inexorable pull of history on the present. Incendies stands as a masterful testament to cinema’s ability to confront violence, silence, and the intimate consequences of political conflict.

The film is in French, with English subtitles.
