Three Los Angeles crime stories, involving two hitmen, a boxer who takes a bribe, and a gangster's wife out for the evening, told out of order and stitched back together. Quentin Tarantino's second film won the Palme d'Or and an Oscar for its screenplay, and its mix of long comic conversation and sudden violence reshaped how American independent cinema sounded for a decade.
