Breaking the Waves
Set in a deeply religious community on the Scottish coast during the 1970s, Breaking the Waves follows Bess McNeill, a young woman whose intense faith and unconditional love are tested when she marries Jan, an oil rig worker.
When an unexpected tragedy changes their lives, Bess finds herself confronting impossible choices between love, faith, sacrifice, and the moral expectations of her community. As her devotion grows increasingly extreme, the film challenges conventional ideas of morality, religious belief, and the boundaries of unconditional love.
Directed by Lars von Trier, Breaking the Waves is one of the most emotionally powerful and provocative films of the 1990s. Winner of the Grand Prix at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, it features an extraordinary, Academy Award-nominated performance by Emily Watson. A deeply moving exploration of human vulnerability, faith, and sacrifice, the film raises profound ethical questions without offering easy answers.
The film is primarily in English. Subtitles are to be confirmed.
